We live in a generation that watches the Home Improvement channel and DIY (Do-It-Yourself) programs around the clock. This can be a great thing! There are certain ventures where it makes sense to try it out on your own, but there are others where it can prove detrimental to attempt it by yourself. It can be for safety, cost, or other reasons. One such area of expertise best left to professionals is the heating and air conditioning field.

Don’t get us wrong, there are certain portions of HVAC analysis you can do on your own. For instance, you can keep a regular eye out for leaks or unusual noises, but when it comes to the repair of these items, it would probably be beneficial in the long run for you to call an HVAC professional. Your heating and air conditioning system is made up of a combination of electrical and chemical items. It’s principles are based on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and the design of an HVAC system requires a certain knowledge of mechanical engineering and HVAC repair training.

The most common motive for individuals to attempt to install or repair their own HVAC system is the fact that installation and repair can be costly. Rather than spend the money, they’d rather see if they can save some cash by doing it on their own. When it comes to installation, this is far from a good idea. Most residential and commercial HVAC installations require an HVAC contractor to design an intricate system, often with the assistance of engineers. Certain permits are required to even begin the process of installation and building codes must be met. If you are not savvy in these areas, you could be facing fines, or worse, from improperly installed equipment.

Aside from legal issues, when it comes to installation, there’s also the comfort in knowing that having your system installed by an HVAC professional generally ensures that the system is set to run at peak performance and efficiency. If you attempt to design the system yourself and install it, you may be inadvertently overlooking crucial pieces of the installation that will cost you more money in the long run because of a lack of efficiency.

As far as the risks for both installation and repair, there are many safety concerns. Remember, you are dealing with electrical components and chemicals. There is always a risk of electrocution, and exposing yourself to dangerous CFC’s (i.e. Freon). Would you rather risk your health, and possibly wallet, in the long run? Or leave it to the guys who were trained for the job?

<![CDATA[6 Ways to Save Money before Calling an AC Service Tech]]>Sat, 30 Jun 2012 19:53:09 GMThttp://www.norcaair.com/1/post/2012/06/6-ways-to-save-money-before-calling-an-ac-service-tech.htmlPicture
Yikes! Your air conditioner isn’t working, what do you do? Checking these simple items first might be able to save you the cost of a service repair call.

Before you call for repair:

 1. Is the thermostat set in the correct mode? Verify that it is set either to heat or cool, and that the system is turned on. Most systems have a built in delay, so wait a few minutes after making any adjustment to see if your system comes on.
 2. Verify your thermostat batteries are not dead. Many but not all thermostats have batteries to do a variety of tasks. It is a good idea to change your thermostat batteries every six months when you change the batteries in your smoke detector. Often there is an indicator on the display (look for something like “batt”) when the batteries are weak. If you are not sure how to access the batteries (or if your unit has them at all), have your technician show you at your next preventive maintenance appointment.
 3. Make sure your windows are all closed. When we are at the time of year where you are alternating between running your HVAC system and opening your windows, it is easy to miss one.
 4. Check your airflow. If a decrease in your HVAC system’s airflow is concerning you, make sure that something is not blocking your supply or return air registers. This is also a good time to make sure that the filter is clean or replaced with a fresh one.
 5. Check the outdoor temperature. Most air conditioners are only able to cool the air about 20 degrees from what the outdoor air temperature is. On a very hot day if your air conditioner seems to be struggling to keep up, just be patient and try to avoid activities that can heat up the house.
 6. Check your fuse box. Sometimes resetting the breaker is all that is needed to get your HVAC system running again. Be careful with this one though, if it happens more than once a technician should be called to determine the reason.

If your air conditioner does not come on, it is time to call the professionals. Call Norca Air Conditioning and one of our trained technicians will get your HVAC system running again.

<![CDATA[ENSURE YOUR HEATING SYSTEM IS READY FOR WINTER]]>Mon, 08 Nov 2010 19:38:22 GMThttp://www.norcaair.com/1/post/2010/11/ensure-your-heating-system-is-ready-for-winter.htmlAnnual heater inspection before winter season makes good sense

As we just come out of our first cold front of the season, we are reminded of how cold our night can get in the winter. Now would be a great time to check your heaters, before the peak of the cold season gets here.
You can follow these easy steps.

 1. Make sure your system has been off for at least five minutes.
 2. Set the thermostat to the heat position.
 3. Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat to around 80 degrees.
 4. You should hear the fan and maybe the compressor start.
 5. After about one minute, feel the air coming out of one of the grills. It should be warm.
 6. Let the system run for five minutes and see if the air coming out of one of the grills is warm.
 7. Set the thermostat back to the OFF position.
 8. Wait five minutes and then you may return the thermostat settings to whatever you wish.

IF YOUR SYSTEM DOES NOT HEAT, contact us & we can diagnose the heating problem. You can call us at 305-558-1422 or click on our Service Request page.
