Planning a summer getaway or heading north for the season? Before you lock up your home in Miami, Hialeah, or anywhere in South Florida, don’t forget to adjust your air conditioning. Setting your A/C correctly while you're away can help you avoid high energy bills, humidity issues, and unexpected repairs.
At Norca Air Conditioning and Heating Corp., we get this question a lot—especially from seasonal residents. Here’s what you need to know.

The Ideal A/C Settings While You’re Away
  • Short trips (a few days):
Set your thermostat to 80°F. This reduces energy use without letting the home get too hot.
  • Longer vacations (weeks):
Set it to 82°F to maintain air circulation and reduce strain on the system.
  • Leaving for the season:
Keep your thermostat between 78–82°F and consider a smart thermostat so you can make adjustments remotely.
🔧 Norca Tip: Always leave your blinds and curtains closed. This helps block out sunlight and keeps the indoor temperature more stable.

Avoid Humidity Problems in Your Empty Home
Humidity can cause serious damage over time—from mold and mildew to warped furniture. If you’re leaving for several weeks or more:
  • Set your A/C to cycle periodically to keep humidity below 60%.
  • Use a dehumidifier if your home is prone to moisture buildup.
  • Leave interior doors open to allow for better air circulation throughout the home.

Before You Go: A/C Maintenance Checklist
A quick check-up before you leave could prevent costly repairs later. We recommend:
✅ Replacing or cleaning your air filter
✅ Clearing leaves and debris around the outdoor unit
✅ Checking for visible leaks in refrigerant lines or ductwork
✅ Flushing your drain line to prevent mold and water damage
✅ Scheduling a professional tune-up before an extended absence

Considering a System Upgrade?
If your A/C has been giving you trouble—or it’s over 10 years old—it might be time to upgrade before you leave. Modern systems are far more efficient and better at managing both cooling and humidity. Plus, with a smart thermostat, you’ll have peace of mind while you're away.
